Research is increasingly demonstrating the benefits of music therapy for family carers: however, there is a paucity in the literature in relation to transferring these interventions online. This study aims to determine the potential well-being benefits of telehealth mindfulness-based music therapy for family carers of people living with dementia.
A four-week music and mindfulness programme took place online via Zoom. 15 minute audio recordings were provided to participants, comprising of mindfulness and music-based exercises curated by a music therapist. Pre-existing resources were provided to the participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis.
Data is currently being collected for analysis. Preliminary results indicate that due to caring commitments, telehealth music therapy offers an accessible, supportive approach.
The needs of this population are often overlooked due to the informal nature of this work. Further research is recommended on the benefits of music therapy for this population.
