SUMMARY:IAMM Book Club - Scales to Scalpels
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this talk with Dr. Lisa Wong on August 9th at 12noon Eastern Daylight Time. \nIn Scales to Scalpels\, Dr. Lisa Wong chronicles how the music acumen of physicians affects the way they administer healing and\, in turn\, how their medical work affects their music. The book attempts to answer the question\, “How does practicing the art of music transform the art of practicing medicine”? \nDr. Wong tells the story of the Longwood Symphony Orchestra\, an ensemble of talented Boston-area physicians\, med students and health-care professionals. The orchestra’s musicians inspire the reader to learn more about doctors who practice the healing arts of music and medicine and the fascinating interplay between medicine and music. Scales to Scalpels is available on amazon.com. \nDr. Lisa Wong is a pediatrician\, musician\, and author dedicated to the healing arts of music and medicine. She is a violinist\, violist and pianist who has worked at Milton Pediatric Associates since 1986 and is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School\, where she is the Associate Co-Director of the Arts and Humanities Initiative. \nDr. Wong will be joined by Dr. Psyche Loui\, music neuroscientist and Director of the MIND (Music Imaging and Neural Dynamics) lab at Northeastern University for a lively discussion on the challenges and changes in the field during the current pandemic. Dr. Loui is also Chair of the IAMM Task Force on Music & Neuroscience. \nThis event is a member benefit and no additional registration is required. All active members will receive the Zoom link via email.  \n  \n\nPast Events:

SUMMARY:IAMM Book Club - Experiencing Race as a Music Therapist
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this talk with Susan Hadley\, PhD\, MT-BC on August 23rd at 12noon Eastern Daylight Time. \nExperiencing Race as a Music Therapist: Personal Narratives is a compilation of critically engaging narratives that grew out of conversations with 17 music therapists living in different parts of the world\, from various racial groups\, about their experiences of their racialized identities in the therapy setting. The music therapists describe the raced and cultural contexts in which they were born and describe the racial demographics of the places they have lived at various times in their lives. The countries in which the individual music therapists spent their formative years include Australia\, Canada\, Iran\, Japan\, Korea\, New Zealand\, Puerto Rico\, South Africa\, the United Kingdom and the United States\, with many of them also having traveled to other countries. \nThe music therapists discussed their specific experiences of their racialized identities when they were studying music therapy and how they experienced their racialized identities in their professional lives. Many of them also described the differences they were aware of in terms of how they experienced themselves as raced or how they experienced the therapeutic relationship when they were working with people of their own race compared with working with people who were from a different race. From these narratives\, we can see that our life experiences shape how we understand ourselves and others\, our assumptions and biases\, and the effort with which we form relationships with different groups of people. The music therapists in this book have shared their experiences in the hope that we can learn how to sit in our discomfort\, without judgment\, lowering our defenses\, in order to learn more about ourselves and others\, so that we can deepen our understandings and our relationships across racialized lines. \nSusan Hadley\, PhD\, MT-BC\, is professor of music therapy at Slippery Rock University\, Pennsylvania. She is the co-author\, editor\, or co-editor of several books including Sociocultural Identities in Music Therapy (2021)\, Our Black Sons Matter: Mothers Talk about their Fears\, Sorrows\, and Hopes (2016)\, Experiencing Race as a Music Therapist (2013)\, Therapeutic Uses of Rap and Hip Hop (2012)\, Feminist Perspectives in Music Therapy (2006)\, Narrative Identities: Psychologists Engaged in Self-Construction (2005) and Psychodynamic Music Therapy: Case Studies (Barcelona\, 2003). She is currently co-editing a book on Colonialism and Music Therapy. She has published numerous scholarly articles\, chapters and reviews\,serves on the editorial boards of several journals\, and is co-editor-in-chief of Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy and Qualitative Inquiries in Music Therapy. \n  \n\nPast Events:

SUMMARY:IAMM With You: In Conversation With Siva Kumar
DESCRIPTION:Every person has the potential to heal themselves by discovering and abiding in the Spiritual dimension. Music is perhaps the most easily accessible route to reach this destination. That’s why\, a strong role for music in all religious and spiritual traditions across various cultures throughout the ages could be discerned. However\, an awareness regarding the mechanism of its working is very important to sustain the gains. Like a map being perused before the actual visit\, the role of music in the scheme of things needs to be understood well. In Eastern philosophy\, especially Indian\, being perhaps among the oldest asserts the individual mind as the centre of the universe. Once this background canvas is experientially established\, the individual personality and the world revealed through the mind get realized as separate un-entangled entities. \nTo reiterate\, the revealing non-localized intelligence\, which is the essence of oneself\, is thereafter known as something not entangled in the enormous and confusing visible panaroma. This clarity affords real and absolute freedom that enables healing to happen at all levels. Music is perhaps the most easiest and endearing means for the mind to become lucid enough to experience and abide in this dimension. In this presentation\, an attempt shall be made to decipher a few relevant verses of scriptural instructions enunciated by someone universally acknowledged as the greatest sage of the 20th century\, Ramana Maharishi\, whom the father of psychoanalysis Carl Jung glorified as the “whitest spot in the white space”. Come\, let’s explore this dimension together! \n  \nAbout the Guest\nSiva Kumar currently\, is associated with the Research Department at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kerala\, South India\, the institution inspired by globally acclaimed spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. He is a post-graduate with M.Phil degree in life sciences and worked in the biopharmaceutical and medical diagnostics industry for over two decades earlier including heading the organization’s corporate training institution as well. He has been disseminating the teachings of Ramana Maharishi for the past several years. He cherishes teaching Indian philosophical thoughts to post-graduate students of Clinical Psychology and value education classes to undergraduates at the healthcare campus of this leading university. He firmly believes that humanity has no option but to evolve to the higher spiritual consciousness in order to establish genuine peace in a world where expanding competitive cultural and religious boundaries cause friction. \n  \nThis event will be hosted by Maria Montserrat Gimeno Domènech\, EdD.\, LCAT\, MT-BC\, a member of IAMM’s Board of Directors. \n\nPlease note that IAMM members do not need to register and will automatically receive a Zoom link for this event. SUMMARY:IAMM With You: In Conversation With Sebastian Hachmeyer
DESCRIPTION:In a recent article about musical healing in the Bolivian Andes (Hachmeyer 2019)\, Sebastian Hachmeyer focused on performative and kinaesthetic aspects of collective flute music and dance as part of a place-based bodily understanding of healing in the Andes. He argued that health and sickness\, but also music and dance\, can be very different things depending on ontological perspective. \nIn this conversation\, he wishes to turn to sound as a source of healing in the Andes. He will discuss sound within three spheres: Sound as Energy\, Sound in Environment\, and Sounds of (Dis)Harmony. \nAbout the Guest\nSebastian Hachmeyer is a Post-Doc Researcher at Georg August University of Göttingen\, Germany. He received his PhD in Music and Geography from Royal Holloway University of London. Sebastian is a human ecologist\, environmental geographer\, and ethnomusicologist specialised in ecomusicology. Besides climate change\, materiality of music/musical instruments\, and questions of sustainability\, his research in Bolivia further addresses issues surrounding musical healing and the relationship to place and the spiritual environment of the Andes. \n  \nThis event will be hosted by Samuel Gracida\, MA\, MT\, IAMM Chair of Communications and Outreach\, Operating Director at Sam’s Fans\, and leader in diverse projects regarding music therapy in Germany\, Mexico\, and Internationally. \n\nPlease note that IAMM members do not need to register and will automatically receive a Zoom link for this event. SUMMARY:IAMM With You: In Conversation With Jennifer Buchanan
DESCRIPTION:Like many music therapists\, Jennifer started with a huge mission. She wanted to help people in their pursuit of optimum health. But after running her private practice for twenty years\, even with thousands of clients and loyal staff\, she felt burned out and not sure if her private practice would make it. Rather than quit\, Buchanan went on an intense quest to prove her private practice’s viability and identify the key components of sustainable healthcare practices. She would need everything she learned a decade later to make it through the pandemic and on to the post-covid world. \n\nAbout the Guest\nFounder of JB Music Therapy private practice in 1991….now almost 30 years later we have a team of 18 certified music therapists. Author of two award-winning books\, ‘Wellness Incorporated’ and ‘Tune In’ with a new book as of October 10 that features the Power of a Playlist. Jennifer is regularly invited to speak at healthcare\, and wellness focused conferences and rounds out her career with an Executive MBA – currently using these skills as the Executive Director of the Canadian Associaton of Music Therapists. \nThis event will be hosted by Aksana Kavaliova-Moussi\, MTA\, member of Music and Medicine’s Editorial Board. \n\nPlease note that IAMM members do not need to register and will automatically receive a Zoom link for this event. SUMMARY:IAMM With You: In Conversation With Nuria Escude & Rafael Ramirez-Melendez
DESCRIPTION:Music is known to have the power to induce strong emotions. In this talk we will assess\, based on Electroencephalography (EEG) data\, the emotional response of terminally ill cancer patients to a music therapy intervention in a randomized controlled trial. A sample of 40 participants from the palliative care unit in the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona was randomly assigned to two groups of 20. The first group [experimental group (EG)] participated in a session of music therapy (MT)\, and the second group [control group (CG)] was provided with company. Based on our previous work on EEG-based emotion detection\, instantaneous emotional indicators in the form of a coordinate in the arousal-valence plane were extracted from the participants’ EEG data. The emotional indicators were analyzed in order to quantify (1) the overall emotional effect of MT on the patients compared to controls\, and (2) the relative effect of the different MT techniques applied during each session. EEG data analysis showed a significant increase in valence (p = 0.0004) and arousal (p = 0.003) during the MT session in the EG. No significant changes were found in the CG. Artificial intelligence techniques were applied to build computational predictive models of music therapy outcomes before the session took place. \n  \nAbout our Guests\nDr. Rafael Ramirez (Prof\, PhD) is a Tenured Associate Professor and Leader of the Music and Machine Learning Lab at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies\, Universitat Pompeu Fabra\, Barcelona. SUMMARY:IAMM With You: In Conversation With Andrés Ojeda and Miguel Basabe
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will focus on a study which identifies through a brain-computer interface\, the correlation between the records of encephalographic signals of intergenerational music therapy activities\, with the regulation of emotions. Emotion regulation is conceptualized as momentary affective states which arise from experiences that modify various areas of the brain\, and the physical and psychological functioning of people. \nA convenience sample of 14 adults\, youth and children in an age range between 7 and 74 years participated in the study\, forming an intergenerational group. The participants were evaluated simultaneously during 16 sessions. \nThe data were processed quantitatively through non-parametric statistics with Wilcoxon signed rank test\, then qualitatively interpreted with a categorical analysis matrix for the triangulation of information\, thus identifying the emotional regulation strategies resulting from intergenerational music therapy methods. \nThe results show that intergenerational music therapy methods and techniques significantly facilitate the regulation of emotions for individuals and groups in terms of attention and concentration; however\, the study sample should be expanded for greater validity and reliability in the results. \n  \nAbout Our Guests\nAndrés Felipe Ojeda Sánchez\, MM\, MT\, Music Conductor and Master in Music Therapy from the National University of Colombia. SUMMARY:IAMM Book Club 2022 - Breaking Strings
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this talk on Breaking Strings: Explorations of Mistakes in Music Therapy on November 11th. \nIn this innovative volume of Breaking Strings\, Avi Gilboa from  and Laurien Hakvoort use broken strings on an instrument as a metaphor to refer to those frustrating and sometimes upsetting moments when things go wrong in music therapy. \nAlthough there are myriad ways in which music therapists can make mistakes and deal with the consequences\, there is limited coverage of this subject in the professional literature. This book explores theoretical ideas and research on mistakes in music therapy. It also presents a series of authentic case studies in which 17 music therapists – ranging from novice to experienced practitioners\, from 13 different countries – describe and reflect on mistakes in their own practice. \nThis book provides a starting point for both students and the wider music therapy community to discuss\, analyze\, and ultimately understand and learn from mistakes as part of their professional development. \n \nAvi Gilboa (Israel)\, PhD\, received his BA in Psychology and Music at Bar-Ilan University\, Israel and subsequently his diploma in Music Therapy and his PhD in Cognitive Psychology. He has been a music therapist since 2001 in various settings and with different clinical populations. He is associate professor and head of the Music Therapy program at Bar-Ilan university. He supervises many music therapy PhD students and is supervisor of music therapy students and graduates. \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nLaurien Hakvoort (Netherlands)\, PhD\, RMTh\, NMT-Fellow\, holds a BA and MA in Music Therapy from Amersfoort and University of the Pacific\, California\, USA\, respectively. She obtained her PhD in Behavioral Sciences from Tilburg University. SUMMARY:Swedish Perspectives on Music/Health Research - Live from Harvard Medical School
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this hybrid event live from Harvard Medical School\, where we will explore unexpected findings from Swedish researchers in the music and health field. We will delve into the question of which results are true and discuss the importance of applied research in this field. \nIt has been observed that in some countries\, policy-makers are not paying enough attention to research results\, partly due to the sheer volume of research being produced. Unfortunately\, this often leads to policy-makers selecting results that align with their own biases\, which prevents meaningful dialogue between them and researchers. Research in the music and health field is particularly important as it has the potential to stimulate the development of brain functions\, so we must advocate for inclusion of music for the health of our communities. \nWe will also explore the importance of unexpected findings\, as they may point to important mechanisms\, and discuss the need to be particularly energetic in discussing findings that go against our own hypotheses. We will discuss both the advantages and drawbacks of our findings and emphasize the need to focus on long-term perspectives. Additionally\, our findings will be discussed in relation to society’s use of music and health knowledge. \nRegistration required for both in person and virtual participants. Please RSVP here by February 17th. \n  \n\nThe address if you will join us in person is: \nCountway Library\, First-floor classrooms \n10 Shattuck Street\, Boston\, MA \n\n\n  \n \nTöres Theorell is a physician. His research has been in stress medicine and psychosomatics. He was director of the National Institute for Psychosocial Factors and Health 1995-2006 and at the same time Professor of Psychosocial Medicine at the Karolinska Institute. The research methodology has ranged from epidemiological studies to longitudinal psychophysiological observational and experimental studies\, as well as controlled interventions. Theorell has supervised over 40 doctoral theses. Theorell is now research consultant at the Institute for Psychosocial Factors and Health and at the Royal College of Music. \n  \n\n \nEva Bojner Horwitz\, professor of Music and Health at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and researcher at the Department of Neurobiology\, Care Sciences and Society\, Karolinska Institute (KI). She is specialized in psychosomatic medicine and the creative arts; co-founder of the Center for Social Sustainability (CSS)\, KI and anchored in interdisciplinary research\, combining quantitative (stress hormone analyses\, heart rate variability\, video analyses) with qualitative research. \n  \n\n \nPhD student Kaja Korošec is a psychologist and a violinist interested in the well-being of musicians and the ways in which music can support the well-being of societies. She is pursuing her PhD in music and health at the Karolinska institute and the Royal College of music in Stockholm. Her research is focused on the roles and meanings of music for autistic adults. \n  \n\nThe researchers will give examples from music/health research showing unexpected results – such findings may point at important mechanisms. \nProfessor Theorell´s four examples: \n\nSwedish twin research shows strong genetic component in association between life-long music practicing and emotional competence\, but brain pictures still show effects of music training on emotion-related brain structures\nEffect of two-month intervention with scheduled every-day music listening on stress hormones in home care Alzheimer patient-caregiver dyads was studied. Results showed compared to controls reduced physiological stress during music intervention period in caregivers but not in patients.\nSix-year oldsters were fascinated by listening to Beethoven´s Appassionata – contrary to expectations.\nSelf-selected arousal music was shown to increase both heart rate and breathing with reduced pCO2 whereas self-selected calming music has less significant but still tachycardic effect although there was no effect on breathing and pCO2 at all. What is the phylogenetic meaning of this?\n\nProfessor Bojner Horwitz will focus on music and health in relation to social sustainability\, inner transformation and creativity seen from students´ perspectives. “Sing health in schools”; “music and learning environments”; “knowledge concerts” and new evaluation methods will be in her focus. \nPhD student Korošec will present the current state of research in the intersection between music and autism. She will discuss the importance of including subjective perspectives and how the lack of those in the past research has affected how we use and understand music in regard to autism. \nUnexpected findings should sometimes be applauded – they may point at important mechanisms. We should also be particularly energetic in discussing findings that go against our own hypotheses. In communication with politicians and journalists both advantages and drawbacks should be discussed\, and long-term perspectives emphasized more actively. \nOur findings will be discussed in relation to society’s use of music/health knowledge. \n  \n\nThis event will be moderated by Dr. Jennifer Zuk. \n \nJennifer Zuk\, PhD CCC-SLP\, is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Communication and Neurodevelopment Lab at Boston University. She is a clinical researcher working at the intersection of music cognition\, developmental cognitive neuroscience\, speech-language pathology\, and education. Her research examines relationships between music\, language\, and the brain in early childhood with an interest in the potential for music to facilitate language development in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. \n\n

SUMMARY:A Physician's Journey Through Music and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joseph (Joe) Schlesinger’s biography tells the story of an anesthesiologist and intensivist who began playing the piano at just five years old. He paid his way through college by performing at jazz clubs in New Orleans and on Carnival Cruise Lines’ “fun ships”. During his residency\, Dr. Schlesinger was a Benjamin Howard Robbins Research Scholar\, and made sure that his research incorporated his musical training from his undergraduate degree. \nThrough this\, Dr. Schlesinger found extra-departmental and extra-institutional mentorship and formed his music and medicine research group. \nHis experience in music medicine led to partnerships which culminated in the therapeutic music program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center\, where he started the first live music and virtual-live music (during COVID) program in the ICU. \nExpanding on qualitative benefits\, he delved into quantifiable benefits utilizing EEG and those data to form the basis for his lab – the Schlesinger Lab – where he investigates multisensory integration and EEG correlates of music genre to understand the dose-response effects of music such that music can be part of the “prescription” in clinical medicine. \nThrough his vast mentorship\, Dr. Schlesinger was awarded a faculty position at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University\, the first anesthesiology faculty member in Vanderbilt’s history to receive such a designation. \nThe conversation with Dr. Schlesinger will explore how music research can impact a research career as one thinks of music at a deeper level\, from the soundscape\, and acoustic features of sound\, and how we interpolate that in our lives\, passively and actively\, to improve patient care and patient outcomes. \n \nLearn more about Dr. Schlesinger’s work here. SUMMARY:Tune into Inclusion: Bridging Gaps through Music in Uganda
DESCRIPTION:Growing up as a person with a disability or a special condition in a society that is not sensitive to one’s challenges and needs can be extremely limiting\, frustrating and isolating. We use music to ensure that children and young people living with a disability\, or a special condition are included and that they get an equal opportunity to showcase their potential and thrive. Brass for Africa has in the past 3 years implemented music-based interventions for children and youth living with autism with majority being severe and non-verbal. We have also used music to improve life and bring joy for severe CP cases. Brass for Africa also brings the joy of music to a Rehabilitation Hospital that performs hundreds of rehabilitative surgeries on children. All our work takes a community approach\, working with caregivers and the trained staff at the homes\, centres and hospitals and none of our musicians and teachers are trained therapists. This area is very new in Uganda and we are leading the pack in using music to develop the understanding of inclusion \nRegister here:\n\n	\n \n\n \n\n \n \n Last Name \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n First Name \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Email Address \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n Submit \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n  \n\nSpeakers\n \nAndrew Agassi\, Chief Operating Officer at Brass for Africa\n\nAndrew Agassi is the Brass for Africa’s Chief Operating Officer (Global) and also serves as the Uganda Country Director. SUMMARY:Perceptions and Experiences in Telehealth Music Therapy Provision from around the Globe
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth discussion led by the IAMM Special Interest Group\, a collective dedicated to advancing the field of telehealth music therapy. Our focus spans the entire lifespan and encompasses both individual and group therapy settings\, delivered from a variety of locations such as homes\, hospitals\, long-term care facilities\, and group homes. Comprising music therapists with specialized expertise in demographics\, diagnoses\, and clinical approaches like NMT and The Bonny Method\, our team has been collaborating since 2020. We have contributed to multiple presentations and spearheaded two major international studies: a comprehensive survey and a follow-up interview study. \nIn this presentation\, we will delve into a groundbreaking International phenomenological mixed-methods study that engaged 572 participants from 29 countries. The study employed an anonymous online survey to gather data on demographics\, clinical practice\, telehealth provision\, and perceptions of telehealth. Our analytical approach included both qualitative and quantitative methods. We used descriptive statistics to summarize the data and inferential statistics to explore relationships between variables. The presentation will conclude with an overview of our findings\, limitations of the study\, and avenues for future research. \nRegister here:\n\n	\n \n\n \n\n \n \n First Name \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Last Name \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Email Address \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n Submit \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n  \n\n\n  \nSpeakers\n\nAmy Clements-Cortes\, PhD\, RP\, MT-BC\, MTA\, Assistant Professor\, Music and Health Sciences\, University of Toronto\, Music Therapist\, Registered Psychotherapist\, Managing Editor\, Music & Medicine Journal\, Canada \nMelissa Mercadal-Brotons\, PhD\, MT-BC\, SMTAE; Vice-director of Academic Affairs; Director of Master Program in Music Therapy (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya; Barcelona\, Spain).
